Disney’s The BFG – Big Friendly Giant

The BFG is a wonderful movie! We went for a date night, and had a great evening. My husband loves movies, and is an elementary school teacher. He uses Roald Dahl’s books with his students, and is very familiar with the story and artwork. We received two preview tickets for our honest review. I am a Disney lover, and it is difficult for me to find reasons not to like everything Disney. They can and are criticized for many things, but I am also an idealist and love looking at the best in others. For the BFG I was a bit bored with the idea of going and grateful that it was a date night, so at least we got to go out together. We do not get a lot of date nights. I have read the book, and it isn’t my favorite. I don’t dislike it, but it is...

Zootopia – Spring Break Family Fun

This review is two weeks late due to severe illness on my part. I am sorry. However, like all Disney classics, this is a movie that you will want to watch again and again. Whether in theaters or your own home. It is a fun show with lots of themes that we face in society. This addresses them in a kid friendly way and will hopefully spark many great conversations! My son and husband got to see this movie for free in exchange for their honest review. As always, any opinions expressed on this blog are our own. They also hope to see more of the Zootopia world, whether in sequels, or in a cartoon series, which means it must have been great!        I am reminded of the movie “Bed Knobs and Broomsticks” where the cartoon animals lived in their own kingdom. Or the movie “Robinhood”, where the cartoon...

Ant-Man – One Small Step for Marvel

Disclosure: We received two tickets to the Disney/Marvel Premier of Ant-Man in exchange for our honest review. As always, opinions expressed on this blog are my own, or that of my husband and kid. My wife brought me because I am a huge nerd that has read comics for a long time. I know what is going on and I get a lot of the references that she may miss. My wife is a good female presence and a bit of a nerd herself. Now we have a 10-year-old that has alternated attending with me or my wife to some of the movies and helped to review them. He is autistic, gifted, ADHD, and all sorts of a nerd himself. He tells us where the scary parts are and what parts are funny to a 10-year-old boy, which are weird spots. We love being able to attend and review movies...

Thanks – Natalie It is monsoon season in Las Vegas. I love the rain. It is beautiful, and smells great. My son hates the thunder and lightning, but I could live in a place where it rains every day, except for the fact that barometric pressure changes cause mega migraines in my brain. They are the awful, don’t talk to me, touch me, or...

365 Days of Mickey Sweepstakes by Pixie Vacation

My family loves Disneyland. We would gladly go to Disney World, and the Disney cruises if we had the funds. When I first got sick, it was imperative to me that I take my son and husband to Disneyland and create great family memories. As my sickness has dragged on that wish to create memories has not waned, but our finances have prevented us from returning as regularly as I would love. We were fortunate to be able to take my son on two fabulous vacations to Disneyland, and we have great pictures, memories and family bonds from those visits. To us it truly is the “Happiest Place on Earth”. I would take my family back every year if I could. One day I may even get to take them over my birthday, which is the day after Christmas. I have always wanted to see Disneyland at Christmastime. Their...

2013 Goals

Rather than overwhelm myself with a years worth of goals, I am going to go month by month, and hold myself accountable via the blog. I divide my goals into categories, and usually like to have a written plan in my planner, and set deadlines, as all the wonderful experts suggest. The good news is that I am very driven and tend to achieve my goals. The bad news is that I often try to do too much. Family – Get  therapy and other interventions in place for Benjamin. Make family time “fun” therapy times. Establish weekly date nights with my husband. Spiritual – Read the Book of Mormon Pray out loud at least once daily. Physical – Exercise daily – I have joined a Dahn yoga studio and need to go everyday. We also have a Disney dance program for the Wii that will be awesome, and I need...

New Year fun with Gutzy Gear

Gutzy Gear My son was thrilled to be able to share Gutzy Gear with his entire second grade class. Because the class is so large, we had the kids play a few games to earn patches, and when they all had two, they got to trade for patches that they really wanted. It was extremely generous of Gutzy Gear to provide all the materials for each child, and the games. The kids loved trading the patches, and still have them on their backpacks. We did this the first week of school, and then I waited to see if the patches would get lost, wear off, or get old. My son still loves them, and even transferred them to a new backpack when the other backpack wore out. The patches look like new and have not be lost or fallen off by accident. My son is NOT careful with his backpack....

Win a Frecklebox – Personalized Gifts for Kids

What child doesn’t love stickers or books with THEIR name on them? I know I coveted them when I was a child. Sadly, when I was a child, there was nothing with my name on it. Come to think of it, there still is nothing available, right off the rack, with my name on it. Liberty. Not enough Liberty’s out there to necessitate the mass production of pencils or bike name plates with our name on them. And oh, how I would look through each section of personalized gifts for kids. Maybe, hidden behind all the Amandas and Tommys, maybe their was a lonely Liberty, waiting just for me. There never was. Somehow, I didn’t make it any easier on any of my own children. While they all have names that are not exactly uncommon, I did spell them in more unique ways. At least I did with my girls’...

Bricks 4 Kidz

Bricks 4 Kidz is a national company that teaches children pre-k to high school through legos and duplos. They offer summer camps, school programs, birthday parties and more. My husband is working there this summer, and I think I was just hired as a social media consultant, and possible special needs teacher, which would be totally awesome. My son goes to most of the summer camps with his Dad and adores them. He will build all day and then come home and build some more. I love it. He is with friends, creating and exploring and learning and growing. I even got into it and built a Star Wars vehicle all day today. It was a lot of fun. They take all ages and stages, and they are super sweet with the kids. It is a fun day, broken up by snacks, games and other activities between building an assigned...

Brave

I was super excited to get to see a pre-screening of Brave last night with my family. I love British and Scottish accents, and am a die hard Disney fan. We were all tired, but the movie was engaging and captivating and much more than I expected. I laughed, cried, and my son was scared a little., but he loved it too. While the previews all make the story seem to be woven around Merida’s fate, it is actually about Mother daughter relationships and responsibilities to family and country. I think that is why I cried so much. I won’t give away much more, but I have had moments with my mother and could completely relate to both Merida and the Mom. We got to watch the movie in 3D, which was gorgeous. They did a phenomenal job of portraying Scotland’s beauty, and there were enough effects to keep you...

Criticism

Yesterday I received a rating of my blogs from one of the groups I am affiliated with. I was at the bottom of their tier. At first I was a little stressed and worried about that. Then I realized something crucial. I have only been blogging for about 6 months, and then only with the intent to blog as a “job” for the last month or so. I’d say I’m doing pretty good for my first month as a “real” blogger. There is a lot to figure out. A whole language with its own set of abbreviations like SEO, and KLOUT and such. I am happy with where my blog is, and excited to see it grow. I generally have a hard time with criticism, mostly because I take it out of context, or blame myself for not being “good” enough. I am not doing that here. This is something...

Memorial Day

We are having a nice quite memorial day. My son and husband went fossil hunting and found some great fossils off the beaten path. We turn them in to the Springs Preservehttp://www.springspreserve.org. They have an amazing nature exchange. My son brings in pine cones, and other natural items. The more he can tell them about the object, or if he writes about it, he gets points. The points can then be traded for other items like special rocks and seashells. It’s an awesome program. He’s been doing since he was two and has a lot of points. We also have an amazing rock and nature collection. I hooked my husband to pinterest. He’s been on it all afternoon. We’re watching movies and pinning away. It is a great way to spend a holiday. Lest my readers think I’m lazy, I also mopped the kitchen, did laundry and dishes, cleaned out...

Helping Boys Read

My son loves to read, and is at the top of his first grade class. I would estimate that he is reading at a 3rd or 4th grade level. He has accomplished this stunning feat this year, thanks to good teachers, and some careful strategies that my husband and I have employed to create a great reader in our son. Now before you go and dismiss my son as being smart, or precocious, or extra focused you need to know that he has ADHD. He cannot focus, sit still for long, or even tolerate a long book. In addition, his father is dyslexic and Ben showed many signs of dyslexia, which we have now learned were due to the ADHD. We do treat his ADHD with medication and that has helped, but it did not teach him to read. My primary message to parents is to read to and with...

It is a way to connect and enjoy life without having to leave my room, which is sometimes necessary. I learned a long time ago, I need connections. I need human interaction, and while I am not so great with adults, I am amazing with children. I just need to learn adult speak. I am working on that. Mother’s Day

Today was a wonderful day. I got breakfast in bed, mini roses, and chocolate. What’s not to love. My husband dealt with the rowdy 7-year-old, who we forgot to give his ADHD meds to, and I slept a wonderful sleep where I saved the community and a child from the apocolypse. I have been having strange dreams lately. My brother skyped my mom from Australia where he is serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He is doing well, speaking Mandarin, and otherwise enjoying sharing our faith with others. Coincidental all of my other siblings managed to call in during his call, so we all got to hear his voice and ask him questions. It is the first time we’ve talked to him since January, and the last time we’ll hear from him until Christmas. We have letters and his e-mails, but it was...

Avengers!

I had the rare and amazing opportunity to see Avengers on its’ preview night, in IMAX 3D. It was amazing, and I talked about it so much, I made my family irritated. Then they went, and now they can’t stop talking about it. We loved Hawkeye, and the Black Widow. I loved that their abilities were amazing, yet they were the “normal” people in the group. I loved Hawkeye’s equipment, and if could find such a bow and arrow set, I would learn how to shoot arrows. I would love to give such a set to my son. He would love it. The jokes and silliness were not missed by my 7-year-old, and he enjoyed Hulk’s occasional pushy behavior when he would strike out against other Avengers. What we really loved was that it was a great story of heroes, and that you want to watch the action in slow...
